CHICAGO--After many months of resisting the release of a “pre-WiMAX” product, Aperto said today it is finally prepared to unveil its standardized broadband wireless access product line, now undergoing certification trials in the WiMAX Forum’s test labs in Malaga, Spain.
The vendor said it will reveal the product line at a media conference Tuesday at Supercomm. Called PacketMax, the IEEE 802.16-2004 (or 802.16d) portfolio has been undergoing beta tests with four carriers, Aperto revealed today: TowerStream and U.S. Wireless in the U.S., Spain’s Iberbanda, and the Netherland’s Entertel Wireless. Aperto revealed few other details about the product line ahead of Tuesday’s launch except that it would be tuned for both 5.8 GHz U.S. and 3.5 GHz international unlicensed frequencies.
Its base station gear, however, is expected to be powered by Fujitsu’s new WiMAX System-on-a-Chip (SoC), while its customer premises equipment is expected to be powered by Intel’s equivalent SoC. Aperto expects its gear to pass certification this summer, making it ready for market trials and commercial sales toward the end of the year.
