
IBM wedges its way into IPTV space

CHICAGO--Joining a host of other companies, IBM this week is pushing its capabilities in the IPTV market, demonstrating its solution that builds on the open IBM Digital Media Framework and IBM Service Provider Deliver Environment (SPDE).
The company also is highlighting its project management experience, noting that it has a host of partnerships and can provide anything from business management and consulting to infrastructure optimization services.
“At the lowest level of this, all the IPTV implementations have an infrastructure around servers to do the video streaming,” said Dick Anderson, general manager of IBM’s Digital Media Industry Group. “Behind all of those things, there’s an enormous amount of work and project management that needs to be done.”
The company already has been selected to provide various technology and services to several carriers, mostly in Europe and Asia, launching video. Iceland Telecom, for instance, has a contract with IBM and Thales to provide a broadcast and video-on-demand solution. The Thales’ SmartVision Broadband Service Platform is based on IBM open architecture infrastructure and IBM WebSphere middleware.
On the show floor this week, the company is running an IPTV demonstration in which it has content coming from various sources. The objective is to show how IBM can help carriers manage all of the various elements of a triple-play service. Key to that management is the eServer xSeries, the BladeCenter server, storage servers and the WebSphere line.
The company already has struck numerous agreements with other vendors and is active in most of the larger service provider deployments, Anderson said.
“We’re seeing over 100 different opportunities, and it’s spread out relatively evenly over the geographies,” he said.
