CHICAGO--Comtrend this week is making one of the first public displays of its ADSL2+ bonded modem, which is in trials with two U.S. carriers.

The Irvine, Calif.-based company has productized the ADSL2+ bonded technology as the NexusLink Residential Gateway, which provides users up to 48 Mb/s by bonding two ADSL2+ lines. Initially, Comtrend said interest in the technology was coming from RBOCs, however, the first deployments more than likely will be in the independent telco market.

“I think you’ll see the IOCs launching first based on their ability to turn things around fast,” said Andrew Morton, general manager of North and South America for Comtrend.

Morton added that the technology still will have application for larger carriers even with the development of VDSL2 standards that will provide for greater bandwidth.

“It’s not going to be a one-size-fits-all environment,” he said. “The telcos that are looking at it see it as the right balance between rate and reach.”

Like most broadband technology providers, Comtrend is getting its greatest response from carriers wanting to deploy IP video services. Using the bonded technology, carriers can deliver 35 Mb/s even at 6000 feet. At that level, they can offer two high-definition streams, one standard-definition stream and still have enough left for a high-speed data service that will outpace cable modems, Morton said.

“It’s really a complement to the telco strategy,” he said. “What they want to see is a hybrid approach [to access technology].”
