Lucent Technologies and CLEC Paetec Communications announced at Supercomm this week that Paetec will license, resell and install the vendor's entire portfolio of equipment, software and services to large business customers in vertical markets. Lucent also made an outsourcing announcement with global consulting group Capgemini to develop and market network integration services, including managed services, professional services and multi-vendor gear installations.

Both partnerships are designed to help Lucent and its partners exploit opportunities in new markets, including government and vertical enterprise segments, according to Cindy Christy, president of Lucent's Network Solutions Group.

Bob Moore, chief technical officer at Paetec Communications, said that some of the key products covered by the agreement with Lucent include elements of Lucent's IMS portfolio to provide "blended voice and data applications. This is part of our evolution to IMS to support blended lifestyle applications," Moore said. "Users are asking for these kinds of applications and the applications are driving us in this direction." Paetec is planning external trials and nationwide deployment for later this year.

Other Lucent products covered by the agreement include the Accelerate Next Generation Communications Solutions portfolio; optical equipment including the LambdaUnite multiservice switch and Metropolis metro optical solutions; IP routing and ATM products supporting MPLS; and the VitalSuite network operations management portfolio.

The Lucent agreement with Capgemini covers services to existing and new customers in North America, where the consulting giant also already works with Cisco Systems. Pierre Danon, group chief operating officer and North American CEO of Capgemini, said, "We will partner with Cisco where its is appropriate, but we also feel Lucent has network services that we need in North America."

Lucent also announced separate contracts with several wireline carriers at the show: Rochester, N.Y.-based Choice One will use the vendor's hosted messaging solution to upgrade its message services in 29 markets; Atlanta CLEC Fonix Telecom and indepedent telco CMC Telecom are both deploying the Lucent Compact Switch; Toronto Hydro Telecom is deploying LamdbaUnit and VitalSuite; and Korean carrier Dreamline with working with Lucent to build a nationwide optical network for video.

In addition to these deals, Lucent announced that a mobile carrier, Midwest Wireless, also is deploying the Compact Switch to support its new oneWave service that integrates mobile service with customers' residential or business phone services.
