Ciena's newest products add flexibility to the company's optical portfolio. The newest addition is the CoreStream Regional wave division multiplexing transmission system. The new product features a smaller channel count (80), covers shorter distances (1000 km) and sports a lower price (configuration dependent) than the CoreStream Agility system.

"The idea behind the regional platform is helping carriers keep their first-install costs lower," said Tom Mock, senior vice president of strategic planning for Ciena.

CoreStream Regional is part of Ciena's recently announced FlexSelect architecture. FlexSelect adds a service focus to Ciena's Lightworks intelligent optical network architecture, he added. Also at the show, Ciena talked up its recently introduced CN 4200 advanced services CWDM platform, which, in the spirit of flexibility, can be configured to support any service or protocol.

In addition to software-configurable services and distributed intelligence, all the new optical products can be managed under a common network umbrella, Mock said.

On the access side, Ciena has extended its service focus with the CNX5 upgrade for SLC 5 digital loop carriers (DLCs). The replacement line card adds circuit-switched voice and DSL to the legacy DLCs. Ciena has shipped 2.5 million lines worth of the cards, Mock said.
