June 8, 4:39 p.m.: We go to the over-crowded, over-rated parties so that you don't have to. Depending on whom you ask, either dozens or hundreds of people were turned away from the Pulver.com party at the House of Blues Tuesday night. Those who didn't make the cut found out that you can talk your way into a hot party invitation, but that doesn't guarantee you you'll get past the fire marshall. I did get in, but don't think I'm trying to lord it over you. The main benefit I got from waiting in line (OK, I cut a few spots--the press needs to have access to these things) was that I lost about 10 pounds from sweating my lanyard off for the 30 minutes I was actually inside the doors. Those of you who know me understand that's nothing a midnight snack won't fix, but still... And I still can't believe some guy from Avaya was trying to get me to bribe him to move up a spot in line. Who did he think was inside? Cher? Several people mentioned, as they tend to do at Pulver parties, that The Pulv should be a nightclub promoter instead of a VoIP promoter. They seem to have forgotten they were at a trade show party instead of Ontourage. --Dan O'Shea

June 8, 11:16 a.m.: In his keynote speech this morning, BellSouth CEO Duane Ackerman acknowledged Chicago's spotty sports record by noting that he saw a bumper sticker that said "Chicago Cubs: 1908 World Champs." "That's loyalty, and that's patience," Ackerman said. --Jason Meyers

June 7, 5:02 p.m.: Being a telco-oriented reporter, it's hard not to get distracted by the pretty images that flicker across the screen in all the nifty triple-play demos on the floor this week. So what's on those TVs? Overwhelmingly, it's sports. It's make for a great demonstration if you can pull off showing fast action in HD. Of course, that content often is coming from a DVD sitting on a player below the demo table or perhaps from a head-end vendor's booth a few aisle away. Zhone opted for "The Incredibles," while Alcatel has the HD version of The Blue Angels. Now if only they would turn up the sound so I can watch the movie. --Vince Vittore

June 7: 4:09 p.m.: Tellabs "Echo Boomers" booth concept is pretty cool: The idea, as explained by Tellabs CEO Krish Prabhu, is that the Echo Boomer generation is the first to grow up with the Internet and mobility as ubiquitous presences. As they plan network and service strategies, telecom carriers should consider their needs and the completely different way they access information, listen to music, watch video and so on. "As this generation grows up and gets buying power, we will see services and the Internet evolve in a very different way," Prabhu said. --Jason Meyers

June 7, 3:31 p.m.: As expected, almost all of the video demonstrations on the show floor at Supercomm look great. But one has to wonder how practical they will be. In one Alcatel demonstration, the application is as cool as it gets, but the set-top box requires the horsepower of a PC. Imagine putting that one past the wife (or whoever makes the home decorating decisions). "Hey honey, there's this really cool new service the telephone company is offering. And all it requires is another PC...in the living room...with all the wires running around." --Vince Vittore

June 7, 10:14 a.m.: IMS gets props for being the telecom industry's acronym of the moment and the most-uttered phrase on the Supercomm show floor so far. But it's still quite confusing. Perhaps it's the fact that despite it being a standardized architecture, IMS can be defined differently by those developing and deploying it. But at least Supercomm '05 gets all IMS proponents in the same place and provides an opportunity to pin them down on their approaches--what comprises various IMS platforms, what applications are possible, and what carriers really expect to get out of embracing IMS. We'll use that opportunity to try to unearth as much IMS clarity as we can. Stay tuned... --Jason Meyers

June 6: 9:31 p.m.: Lehman Bros. invited a bunch of people to watch the Cubs/Blue Jays game from rooftop across the street from Wrigley Field--maybe you have heard, since the invitation was apparently circulated far more broadly than LB had intended. Oversubscribed, LB decided to leave the press at the altar--of course, if you've gotta cut somebody... That's alright. A Cubs loss and an uncharacteristically intensely humid evening in Chicago made me sorta OK with the fact that I got the boot--well, maybe I'm not OK with it, but I understand. LB's getting the publicity here anyway... just not the kind it might have gotten... --Dan O'Shea
